What Glacier Guides Do In The Off Season?

After another amazing summer, our employees are off to do what Glacier Guides do in the off season!

Ever wonder what Glacier Guides do in the off season?

Traveling. Many of guides take the few months just after we close to travel.  Some go home to see their families others take the time to leave the country.  This year…

Jen B. has gone to visit her sister in Austrailia.

Jen Acacia is headed south of the border for a season of surfing.

Tara S. is in Tanzania for a few months.

Sarah M. is trying to make up her mind where she is headed next (it’s usually something that makes us all jealous).

Melissa S. is guiding trips in several different parts of the world for Natural Habitat.

Learning. We also have plenty of friends that are continuing their education.

Our kitchen manager Kelly has just started nursing school (we wish her good luck on her new endeavor).

Scott B. attends Montana State.

So does Kaitlin P. as a Physics major and an ROTC cadet.

Alison E. is in Medical School in Oregon.

Clayton S. is an English and wilderness studies major at University of Montana.

Teal G. is a geology major at University of Montana.

Megan A. is studying outdoor education in Pocatello.

Val D. is studying neurobiology at University of Maryland.

Teaching. For some employees, this is just a fun way to spend their summers “off.”  For most their main career is teaching (a big shout out to these folks for teaching our youth!!!).

Damian E. teaches high schoolers at Summit Prep (and taking students on outdoor adventures when possible).

Amy B. teaches and coaches in Helena.

Loretta G. teaches English.

Dan V. works at Flathead Valley Community College.

Keith M. teaches elementary school in Whitefish.

Pete M. is a middle school science teacher in Whitefish.

Alida W. is a speech pathologist at West and East Glacier, as well as Browning schools.

Corey W. teaches at an environmental education center.

Tami M. substitutes in Missoula in hopes of a permanent position.

Don P. “spends his weeks getting 6th graders pumped about math.”

Carter E. is “changing the world one 7th grader at a time.”

Working. A handful of folks work totally different jobs.

Courtney M. works as an EMT for a local emergency unit.

Vi B. is soaking up the sun in Daytona.  She is working at the Harley Museum store (yes, we are awaiting some motorcycle pics!).

Courtney N. is an attorney for the state.

Nelson Grant is a local police officer.

Carolyn B. is a cartographer (she makes a great Flathead Valley map).

Sara E. is in Oakland, CA working at California Canoe and Kayak.

When not working for patrol in the winter, Judith and Corrie take trip reservations for the Guides.

Waiting for snow. We also have a long list of folks that linger around and help winterize the business… and hike Glacier when nobody else is here.  Most of these employees work seasonally for Whitefish Mountain Resort.

Randy G., Denny G., Judith M., Jeff S. (aka “Butte”), Corrie H., Cheri L., and Brian H., all work for ski patrol.

Joe P., Kevin M. and JD work lifts.

Katie D., Bryan M., work in events.

Dean N., Irv H. and Kiandra W. work for lodging.

Stacey B. and AJ C., work for ski school.

So this is what we are doing…our guide family out doing some cool stuff.  We can’t wait to see everyone again and fill spring evenings with stories of winter.

“But then fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous ass as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you.”
