Private Glacier National Fly Fishing – Day Trips

Do you dream of a summer afternoon fly fishing on Glacier’s gorgeous border rivers? We can make that dream come true! Our professional guides can get you into the Montana fly fishing you’ve dreamed of. The Middle and North Forks of the Flathead River form Glacier National Park’s borders. These waters, part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, are where we fish. They offer outstanding habit and opportunities for native westslope cutthroat, whitefish, rainbow, and brook trout. We are one of only two outfitters in this area with permits to fish on the North and Middle Forks – come see what makes this area such a special fishery!

Private Overnight Fly Fishing Excursions

Typically, we run our private, overnight fly fishing trips on the Wild and Scenic North Fork of the Flathead River. This remote, gorgeous river forms Glacier National Park’s western border. Its fishery supports native Westslope Cutthroat, as well as Rainbow and Brook trout. You’ll fish from a dory, which can accommodate 2 people. Your gear will follow on a separate boat. Our guides are very knowledgeable, and if you don’t have much experience they will be happy to teach you some handy techniques. You’ll camp riverside each night, and enjoy delicious, largely locally sourced and organic meals – and a campfire, too.

What Our Guests Say About Our Private Tours Of Glacier National Park

We did a 5 day custom guided backpacking trip with Glacier Guides and it could not have been any better! When one leg of our trip was complicated by the closing of the boats across Waterton Lake, Glacier Guides was right on it, rearranging permits so that we were still able to see places we were hoping for. From the permitting to the shuttling to the awesome food, backpacking with Glacier Guides is the ultimate experience! This was my second backpacking trip with them and I have nothing but the highest praises. Our guide was knowledgeable, attentive to our needs and was funny and a pleasure to be around. We helped carry the food but he did all the cooking so we were able to relax at the campsites after long hikes. I’m still reliving this experience in my head! Can’t wait to plan another with Glacier Guides!! -Private Backpacking Trip

Our Guide was amazing. She knew about local geology, geomorphology, and of course she was great at controlling the raft. The water was crystal clear and beautiful. Actually this trip was one of the highlights to our vacation! -Half Day Scenic Float Trip Guest

My husband and I took an all day guided fly fishing trip in Mid July. The weather was perfect, Our guide was absolutely FANTASTIC! His drift boat was top notch and super comfortable. We had never fly fished before. He taught us how to get it done. He knew just where to find the fish. We caught more than twenty of the beautiful West Slope Cut Throats and a few Rainbow Trout (catch and release). He fed us a marvelous lunch on a beautiful rocky beach on the North Fork Flathead River. -Private Full Day Fly Fishing Experience

Our group of five had a blast on this trip in early-August. River levels were down, so I wouldn’t call it an adrenaline-rush rafting trip, but we hit a few class 3s and learned a lot about Glacier’s history from our guide, Charlie. Not only was Charlie informative, but answered a zillion of our questions and was a super chill guy with a great personality and sense of humor (not to mention his super cool Pit Viper shades). Charlie told us about several of his favorite fly fishing spots on the Middle and South forks of the Flathead River. He also recommended several moderate hikes based on time of year and the potential of viewing wildlife. Finally, he told us about a prime spot to do some bridge jumping into the Flathead, which we did the next day. I would highly recommend Glacier Guides rafting and I would suggest inquiring in advance to see if you can request Charlie as your guide. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to America’s coolest national park. Thanks, Glacier Guides… and thank YOU, Charlie. -Half Day Sport Whitewater

My husband and I went on two tours with Glacier Guides in July 2018; the first a four day back country hike and the second a fly fishing tour.

We hiked the Gable Pass, guided by Jeremy. A stunning hike that thoroughly delivered well beyond expectations. Jeremy was knowledgeable and very organised. We were in good hands.

A tip though – travel light and do your physical training well ahead of departure. We had three people pull out on day two because they realised they weren’t fit enough. It was sad to lose them from our group. The situation was well-handled by Glacier Guides, who sent in another guide to walk them out, while the rest of us hiked on.

Our second tour was half day flyfishing, led by AJ. This was a life highlight for my husband (even though I out-fished him!) AJ’s passion was evident and he was a great teacher. “Cast it, mend it, good drift…. eat it…. come on fish… eat it!” -Backpacking and Private Half Day Fly Fishing Experience

We love this company!! From the moment you make that reservation, the office staff takes care of you. They are friendly, knowledgeable and patient and really want to work with you and your family to ensure the best experience for all. When we went rafting, our guide was awesome as well. He made sure that all were having fun, especially the sometimes surly teenager. 😆 Seriously, everyone, from start to finish, made sure we were taken care of. -Jessi, Half Day Sport Whitewater Rafting Experience

My daughter gave me a guided fishing trip either here or on the Yakima River in Washington. I chose the Flathead in Montana. I did a 1/2 day, afternoon, and had AJ as the guide. It’s been a couple decades since I did fly fishing and this was my first time on a drift trip. AJ was great. He recognized my level of experience and was real patient until I regained my form. And, we caught fish. Some were small, but half of them were definitely “picture” fish. -Private Half Day Fly Fishing Experience

It was a lovely float down the river. Our guide was super helpful and capable on the water. It was a three generation family activity for us, and we made a lasting memory. Customer service was excellent!! -Scenic Float Dinner Experience

Our guide was Jeremy Covert. He was fantastic in pointing out interesting things during our hike and explained some of the history involved in the park. Jeremy was a wealth of information and was very aware of the capabilities of everyone in our group, offering to carry packs for those who were feeling a little weary and showing care and compassion for each individual in our group. He explained what to look out for during our hike. While our hike was quite challenging I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and it was very exhilarating to get to the top of the Scenic Point Hike. For the record none of our group took Jeremy up on his offer to carry packs. For those who are lucky enough to have Jeremy as their guide I can guarantee he will ensure that their experience is a positive one. Thank you for a fabulous day of hiking, challenges and the most amazing scenery. Hopefully I will get the opportunity to visit again. Thanks Jeremy. -Donna L., Private Day Hike

We did a custom day hike to St Marys and Virginia Falls. Our guide Melodie was unbelievable. She’s super knowledgeable about the park, what to see, what to lookout for, things to know about the glaciers, the wildlife, etc. We spent 6-7 hours with her and every minute was great. Driving the Going To The Sun Road, hiking to Virginia Falls, I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

If you ever want a guided tour through the park – I couldn’t recommend Glacier Guides and Montana Raft enough. From the first email to inquire about guided tours and hikes to the end of our journey, everything was well planned, the team was super responsive and I hope one day I can go back. -Private Day Hike

We just returned from Glacier National Park and had a fabulous experience! We spent one day white water rafting with Glacier Guides and Montana Raft and another day fly fishing with them! They were so knowledgeable on the area and the park and their guides were amazing! Fun to be with and very service oriented! I would highly recommend them for your trip! -Whitewater Rafting and Private Fly Fishing Experiences

We had the good fortune of biking on two consecutive days with this amazing company. On the first day, we took the Going To The Sun Road to Logan Pass and it now lives in my memory as one of the best days I’ve spent outside, and I’ve been out a lot. The team took care of us from the instant we arrived at the parking lot, making sure we were safely and correctly outfitted for the adventure while also sharing their generous spirits. We hit the road, and they regaled us with local stories, jokes, and their impressive knowledge of the local area, including fauna, flora, and geologic history. They cheered us on and offered support for the entire ride, and made the entire thing that much more special. We were with Jeremy and Ryan for this day and 100% recommend them.

The second day was a custom tour of the East Side of the park with Josh and it was equally as phenomenal. He and the crew helping us set the tour up gave us the same level of incredible help and communication in getting things organized and took care of all the details. Josh has an incredible breadth of knowledge of the entire park, and told us story after story while again seeing to our safety and well-being. 10/10 recommend him and the East side experience!

In sum, they rock. I’ll be back! -Private Bike Tour of the Going to the Sun Road

Our family was blown away by our experience with Glacier Guides. We lucked out and were assigned Tom Matelich and Allie Prokosch as our guide and porter. Tom was at the permit office at 4am to secure a wonderful permit to hike the Gunsight Pass Trail. The backpacking details were perfect, we felt super safe, the rigor and plan of the trip were exactly what we had described as our ideal, we were impressed with all respects shown to the environment, we learned so much about all flora and fauna and history, the meals were incredible, Tom planned perfectly for our one picky eater and we all ate like kings, just really super impressed.

But what took this whole family trip over the top for us were the personalities of our guides. Tom and Allie felt like family to us by the end of our trek. Though I know they were ready to be free of our inquisitive and talkative family, (two boys 15 and 13), we adored them and could not believe how well their humor and stories and personalities blended with ours. Just really impressed with their efforts to make everything so fun and to put us at ease. Tom and Allie spoiled us with their attention to every detail and their super strong backs! Tom and Allie are Glacier Royalty!

Glacier Guides as a company is super professional, their facilities and vehicles are sharp and clean, Judith was amazing to work with from the very beginning and laid out what will likely be our most talked about family trip! A ++++++

Many thanks to Tom and Allie and Judith! -Private Backpacking Experience

Glacier Guides organized a backcountry trip for our family of 4. Everything was so well organized. Judith helped us secure a reservation and made sure we were well prepared. Our guide (Tom Matelich) designed a PERFECT trip around our goals and ability levels, securing excellent camp sites for us. His knowledge of Glacier’s geological history, plants and animals as well as experience with twists and turns of the trail made our experience very fun and he provided fabulous company along the trail. With Tom’s help we saw several bears at a safe distance, Big Horn sheep and mountain goats. The food was superb (lots of local foods and interesting diverse meals) and Tom prepared it like an expert. We found the hike (to Pitamakan Pass) quite doable and the scenery absolutely breathtaking. I am 62 and my husband is 63 — we are in decent shape but not crazy fit. Our 24 year old daughter and her 25 year old boyfriend thought the pace was just right too but I’m sure they could have covered more terrain if need be. We did about 20 miles over the 3 days. We hope to go out with Glacier Guides again in the future. Glacier National Park is a very special place and the community is lucky to have Glacier Guides there. -Private Backpacking Experience

My husband and I had wanted to camp at Fifty Mountain for many years. Although we are experienced backpackers, we decided to book a custom 4 day trip with Glacier Guides. We invited a good friend and our daughter along for a challenging itinerary that included a short, hot and steep hike into Granite Park campground, a 12 mile day over two snow drifts to Fifty Mountain, and a final overnight at beautiful Kootenai Lake . Glacier Guides provided the permits, transportation, logistics (super important when departing the U.S. on foot and arriving in Waterton, Canada by boat), and our guide John, who is a consummate pro. We were totally spoiled with gourmet meals tailored to our individual preferences and allergies. Shrimp and veggie stir fry for dinner, smoked salmon for a trail side lunch and chocolate fondue for dessert were among my favorites! Then imagine our surprise when we were greeted with an amazing picnic lunch upon our arrival in Canada. Locally sourced salads and vegetables, delicious sandwiches and homemade cookies never tasted better to weary hikers before the long drive home. The scenery was spectacular, we learned some new things about the park and enjoyed the moose and swan sightings along the way. Oh and eating the ripe huckleberries and thimble berries along the trail! The trip of a lifetime. Thanks Glacier Guides. -Private Backpacking Experience

For the half-day whitewater trip, my guide was Amber. She is quite literally one of the best in the business. She shared with us all kinds of fascinating tidbits about the local history, flora, water flow, and geological features along the river– far more so than ANY guide I’d ever rafted with before. She’s clearly well-educated in geology and river hydrology, and shares her knowledge in such a humble, friendly way. This made the beautiful scenery along the way even more awe-inspiring.

Amber was also wonderful (the best I’ve ever experienced) at handling the ores. Unlike some previous trips I’ve taken with other raft companies, she didn’t exhaust us with a heavy dose of paddling. We did just enough to help where needed, but most of the time she handled the boat herself and allowed us to just enjoy the ride and soak in the views.

This raft trip is longer than is that of the main competing company, and instead of having to hike up a river bank and walk a quarter-mile back to town– cold, dripping wet, and paddle in-hand –Montana Raft takes you further down the river, where you’re picked up by the bus, right at the river’s edge, driven back to Glacier Guides/Montana Raft, and delivered right to the door of the life jacket barn. This nicety is appreciated, and it would be reason enough for families with small children, older individuals, or those with ambulatory challenges to choose this company. -Half Day Whitewater Rafting Trip

We did a group hike and custom guided hike with Pete, our guide for each day. Normally we like to hike ourselves, but wanted to be accompanied in Glacier by someone with local knowledge because of the grizzlies. Pete was outstanding: very knowledgable, engaging, a perfect hiking companion! The scenery was amazing, would definitely recommend this. -Private Day Hike

Did not have a ton of knowledge or experience with Glacier National Park so booked Glacier Guides for a day trip my first day in the area. Was looking for some short hikes and spots for wildlife – also learn some information on the park. My guide Jennifer was great – her enthusiasm for her job is off the charts – as is her knowledge of the area. Did a couple 2 hour or so hikes – covered a good amount of the park via car as well and she pointed out a lot of the great highlights of the park. She knew where to look to see some nice wildlife – had great sightings up close of several mountain goats and saw four moose on our hike near Many Glacier. Saw other animals including many Marmots and small mammals, birds and a large Big Horn sheep up near Logan Pass. She passed along lots of helpful hints that came in handy for my remaining few days in the area. The trip also included a nice lunch we enjoyed by RedRock lake as we watched a mother moose and her calf. All in all a great day with a great guide and company. They offer many services from hiking to rafting to custom trips. Highly recommend them. -Private Day Hike

Once again – our annual raft trip with the Guides! Fabulous! These guys are so great – can’t say enough good! Had Brandon and Demi as our guides and then cooks for our fabulous bbq dinner. What a great time and yummy food! Seriously they are THE company to float with on the river and their food is EXCEPTIONAL!! Brandon and Demi were EXCELLENT!!!!! Ask for them by name! Can’t wait until next year!

Also – I know from first hand knowledge that this company is one of the very very few that actually hire professional fishing guides that know the river and have fished it for years – other companies just give a raft guide a fishing rod and send them out there – if you want to fish – Go with the GUIDES!!! -Half Day Scenic Dinner Float

On our recent vacation to Glacier National Park we booked a raft trip and a custom day hike with Glacier Guides. Both of these events exceeded our expectations. The staff was delightful to deal with and Sara was an excellent guide on our hike in Two Medicine Valley. Glacier Guides worked with us to ensure we got the most out of our experiences. Sara was extremely knowledgable about the park, the wildlife and the fauna. My husband and I are already talking about going back and planning future hikes! -Private Day Hike

We booked a custom half day hike as we had to be back at ranch by a certain time and we really wanted to be able to go at our own pace and not hit as many crowds. We were met by our guide Katie who put together a few hike itineraries based on our timeline. We can’t say enough about Katie! She was well prepared, extremely knowledgable and so much fun! We started off on the “going to the sun” road and it was so great to have a guide driving as it allowed our entire group to take in the magnificent views and Katie pointed out so many interesting facts about the park, the climate, history-did I mention her environmental sciences background? 🙂 Once we started our hike it was clear that Katie found us a special, less traveled, off the beaten path as we had hoped…beautiful hike in nature and we were learning so much. Lunch had been packed by Katie and it was a delight. We ate lunch by a beautiful lake and the lunch was delicious-I am pretty picky and not typically a fan of packed lunches…. Farm fresh cheese slices, crisp veggies, artisan bread, homemade trail mix, fresh fruit….hike was capped off with a few of us dipping our head in the stream and a relaxing drive back down the mountain post hike. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Loved meeting Katie and we learned so much-things we never would’ve known! Highly recommend!!! 🙂 We’ll all bring our kids next time around! -Private Day Hike
We found the business location without any problems. Check in was easily done. Getting our equipment and safety instructions were very clear. Ride to the location to drop into the water could have been shorter. Float trip was great. Our guide, Eric was wonderful. He really made our float. He should be commended. Eric provided a great lunch and anticipated our every desire. He was jovial with a great attitude and very capable. We were on a custom trip so we were able to go to an area that was seldom travelled. He gave us great information about the area and we always felt safe yet had fun going down the rapids.
We booked a custom raft trip on the North Fork for 6; Eric was our guide. He was outstanding. Personable, fun, knowledgeable about the river and nature. He was very attentive to our needs: any time one of us said “look at that”, he immediately turned the raft for a better view. Lunch was delicious. Near the end of our trip, Eric even rescued a stranded kayaker and his dog! I highly recommend this company…it will highly enhance your trip!

Being a group of only 2 people, and having never had experiences with bears, we decided to hire a guide for the Grinnell Glacier Trail, which is on the east side of the glacier and their office is on the west side. They do not offer pre-packaged day trips there, so we decided to do the Custom Tour which is $450 for a group of 1-5 people – and worth every penny.

Our guide, Corey (the best guide ever!!!), drove to Many Glacier Hotel to meet us in the lobby and came prepared with a backpack full of first aid materials and food for the day. Grinnell hike is 12mi roundtrip so we split up the items into our bags, drove to the trailhead and headed out. It was great having the personal guide because he was able to tell us all about the plant life, animal life, glacial formations, etc in the area. Corey was extremely knowledgeable and very funny. Before going on the trip, Judith at Glacier Guides asks us questions about our fitness level, what we wanted from the hike, and paired us really well with Corey who went at our pace and had a good sense of humor throughout the day. They provided a sandwich (meat and vegetarian options available), along with a cookie (which was delicious), veggies, snacks, and drinks. The plus of having a guide was that Corey provided a water filter so we were able to drink from the Glacial water. It was a very warm day when we hiked, and if we hadn’t had the guide, we most likely would have run out of our water supply that day. Corey also made sure safety came first, making sure conversation was flowing when there weren’t many people around, so as to scare of any bears we might come across. He was absolutely fantastic and we only have positive things to say about Corey (he even wrote us a nice post card which came in the mail when we arrived back home!). I know he does the overnight back country trips as well – so weather you want to go for a day hike or overnight, I would highly recommend doing a trip with Corey. -Private Day Hike

Glacier Guides is awesome. This is the first time I’ve ever posted to TripAdvisor, which is a testament to their outstanding operation. I completed an amazing backcountry trip in the Belly River of Glacier National Park. The custom route was perfect. The guides are some of the most knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and fun people I’ve ever met. Their love of the park is inspiring. In addition, Glacier Guides provided my fiancé and me with a fantastic half day whitewater rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River – an exciting and stunning float. If you are looking for some help navigating the mountains or rivers of Glacier, go with Glacier Guides! -Private Backpacking Adventure

We just came back from a 3 day custom backpacking trip with Glacier guides. They were outstanding. The arrangements were fabulous – they really take care of you and want to make sure you have a good time. Out coordinator Judith ensured there wasn’t a hitch. Our guide, Vince, was a fabulous cook who made hot meals EVERY night. All we had to do was hike and enjoy the scenery, everything else was taken care of. Elida (I am not sure if I am spelling her name right) our driver was full of knowledge about the park and gave us lots of little tidbits about the park we would have never known. I would very strongly recommend these guys. Good people to have take care of you. -Private Backpacking Experience
